A structural consultancy was producing detailing for 9K tonnes of rebar a year and falling behind. Weak checking meant code and detailing errors were caught at plan review and on the pour deck, not in the calc — each one a field change that stalled trades and threatened the schedule on a 45-storey tower.

ACI 318-what? ASCE 7-which? Amended by whom? The design-basis sheet pins every edition, parameter, and local amendment — because the code that changed last cycle is the resubmittal you get next month.

The seismic provisions that changed between ASCE 7-16 and 7-22 aren’t formatting differences — they change member sizes, and a team detailing to the remembered code on a jurisdiction that adopted the new one is producing confident non-compliance.

THE PINNING SHEET, PER PROJECT

Governing editions (ACI 318, AISC 360/341, ASCE 7, the IBC year, Eurocode parts where applicable), jurisdiction amendments, seismic design category and its inputs (site class, mapped accelerations, importance factor), wind parameters, and load-combination set — pinned at kickoff, signed into the design basis, and named on every calc cover and drawing general note, so “compliant” always answers “with what, as of when.”

THE AMENDMENT WATCH

Jurisdictions in the active book monitored for adoption changes: a code-cycle adoption mid-project triggers the impact memo to your EOR — what changed, which elements it touches, whose call the response is (theirs) — because the adoption date nobody tracked is the plan-check comment everybody gets.

UNITS AND LOCALIZATION, EXPLICIT

Imperial/metric declared per project and enforced at the template level — a bar schedule that mixes systems is a field error with a mill certificate.

THE PRINCIPLE“Compliant” without an edition is a claim without a referent. The pinning sheet makes it a dated, checkable fact — the difference between passing plan check and reprinting the set.

Rebar: the cage that can be poured

Schedules generated from the model (never hand-transcribed — machine-truth in bar marks), development and lap lengths computed per the pinned code edition (the numbers that change between editions), bend types to the standard your fabricator runs, and congestion review at every beam-column joint and coupler zone — the constructability check that asks the only question the site will: can this cage physically be assembled, and can concrete physically get through it? The joint that models beautifully and can’t be poured is a field redesign performed by whoever’s standing there.

The sets had lived full lives: designed under one code cycle, revised through value engineering, re-detailed after coordination, issued and re-issued — and at each step, the three layers (design basis, analysis model, issued drawings) drifted a little. The symptoms were quiet: the plan-check comment citing a parameter the calc didn’t use, the general note naming a code edition the jurisdiction had left, the member on Sheet S-301 two sizes different from the model nobody had opened since the resize. Each layer was maintained by someone; the agreement between them was maintained by no one.

Per set: basis-to-calc verification (the model’s actual inputs extracted and diffed against the stated basis — the seismic parameters, load combinations, and material strengths the run really used), calc-to-drawing reconciliation (member schedules, reinforcement, connection references diffed model-to-sheet — Section 4’s gate, applied retroactively), edition audit (general notes vs. jurisdiction’s current adoption), and findings triaged by consequence: capacity-relevant divergences escalated to the EOR same-day with the analysis (we find; the EOR judges), documentation divergences batched for correction, and edition drift mapped to the amendment watch.

The audit family’s twenty-sixth member extends MD-065’s epistemics to the highest stakes: three layers, each individually maintained, collectively divergent — and unlike the tolerance stack, the emergent defect here is load-bearing.
