An international GC was federating architectural, structural and MEP models by hand and still catching clashes on site. Uncoordinated models meant conflicts surfaced during construction, not in the CDE — each one an RFI that stalled trades and threatened the schedule on a $400M hospital project.
We shortlisted re-run-verified coordination providers and stood up a BIM coordination cell across Manila and Cebu — federating models in the firm’s own ISO 19650 CDE and BEP, running Navisworks and Solibri clash detection to closure, and gating every coordinated issue through an independent licensed-engineer check.
Clash-free issue rose to 98%, open clashes at issue fell 77%, and coordinated models cut overall delivery time by 22%. Site RFIs traceable to model clashes dropped by more than three quarters, and the hospital build came back onto schedule.

Fourteen thousand raw clashes is a screenshot. A triaged register with owners, deadlines, and in-model verification is a coordination program — and the difference is what you’re actually buying.
Clash detection is a button; clash resolution is the profession. Any intern can run Navisworks and produce 14,000 clashes; the coordination product is the pipeline that turns 14,000 into a triaged, owned, closed, and verified zero.
Clash tests are engineered per discipline pair before the first run: hard clashes vs. clearance violations vs. workflow clashes separated, tolerances set to constructable reality (the 3mm pipe-insulation graze is not the duct through the beam), self-intersections and known-false patterns filtered by rule — because a 14,000-clash report is not rigor; it’s an unfiltered query, and the team that ships it has outsourced the thinking to you. The tuned baseline typically resolves raw counts by an order of magnitude before a human triages anything, and the ruleset is versioned per project.
Triage assigns each real clash a responsible discipline, a priority (path-critical zones first — plant rooms, ceiling voids, risers), and a resolution deadline tied to the coordination calendar. The register is the docket: unowned clashes are the ones that reach site, and the dashboard shows aging-by-discipline so the trade that’s sitting on its queue is a fact, not a meeting accusation.
Weekly coordination is prepared, not improvised: the agenda is the aged and disputed clashes, each with viewpoints saved, options sketched where the resolution is non-obvious, and decisions minuted into the register — so the meeting produces closures, not tours of the model.
A clash is closed when the revised discipline model clears the re-run — never when someone marks it resolved. Status taxonomy with teeth: resolved (re-run verified) · approved-deviation (documented, signed) · suppressed (rule-filtered, logged) — three different words for three different things, because the register that conflates them is manufacturing the site surprise it exists to prevent.
Federation doesn’t fix models; it combines them. A model with broken shared coordinates federates into confident nonsense — so every discipline model passes the health gate before it touches the federation.

Shared coordinates verified against the project base point (the single highest-consequence check in BIM: a model 200mm off datum generates a thousand fictitious clashes and hides the real ones), units and true-north confirmed, worksets and naming per the BEP, file health screened (purge state, warning counts, corrupt families flagged), LOD spot-checked against the stage’s requirement — pass/fail, logged, with failures returned to the authoring discipline with the diagnostic, not silently patched. We flag; the author fixes — a coordinator “fixing” another discipline’s model is a liability transfer nobody signed.
The badge says LOD 350+; the gate makes it checkable: element sampling against the LOD spec per discipline per stage, and the coordination report states what LOD the clash results are valid at — because clash-free at LOD 200 is a promise about placeholders, and the buyer deserves to know which confidence they’re being sold.
ISO 19650 isn’t a clash workflow; it’s an information-management regime — and “CDE workflows” earns its place only when the page can name the machinery.

The register said 94% resolved and the site kept finding clashes. The register had been managed the way registers drift into being managed: statuses set in the tool, re-runs occasional, filters accumulating (each one reasonable, nobody tracking their union), and closure meaning whatever the closer meant that week.
